Blue light is a part of the spectrum of visible light (sunlight), which is made up of other colors such as red, orange, yellow, and green. Each of these different colored rays has a different wavelength.

When a light ray has a relatively long wavelength, its energy will generally be lower, so it will not be harmful to our eyes. However, when a light ray has a short wavelength, its power will be higher and cause eye problems. 

Ultraviolet rays have very short wavelengths. For example, blue light is close to ultraviolet light in the visible spectrum. Therefore, its wavelength is short, and its effects will be negative for our eyes. 

Both projectors and TVs produce blue light. We have to bear in mind that projectors have an advantage since their blue light is indirect. That means it reflects off the surface or screen. The opposite occurs in televisions since they emit said light directly, being more harmful to our eyes. 

In televisions, the blue light becomes more powerful when we are watching a movie or series at night with the lights in the room are off. 

What Can We Do to Reduce Exposure to Blue Light? 

Unless you want to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes while watching a movie or series, which can be uncommon and uncomfortable, the best way to protect your eyes from blue light is by reducing the time you watch the screen.

Emitted Light vs. Reflected Light 

Every year, television manufacturers try to improve the quality and clarity of the images produced by their devices. Today, TVs have a much more powerful brightness than those of previous years. Although increasing brightness is a considerable improvement in image quality, there is a limit to the amount of brightness our eyes can handle. 

Unlike TVs, projector screens do not emit light directly. The projector bulb directly emits light which is reflected onto the screen or surface.

In this way, your eyes will not receive the light from the projector directly, thus reducing the levels of stress and tension on the optic nerve. In addition to that, the large screens that you can use in projectors make your eyes less strained. 

Is the Light from the Projector Bulb Dangerous for Our Eyes? 

Of course! We have discussed that what really causes eye problems is the direct light emitted by the device. TVs emit light directly from the screen while projectors reflect it. 

The reflected light from the projector results from the bulb, responsible for emitting the light directly. 

The light from a bulb is dangerous when we stare at it. Most projectors have a light source of approximately 6 kilowatts which can be very harmful to the human eye. In extreme cases, it could cause serious eye damage and even blind the person. 


The direct light from a TV can be more dangerous to our eyes than the indirect one from a projector. Even so, we must take the necessary safety precautions to prevent direct light from the projector lamp from affecting our eyes.
